The Office of Technology Assessment reviewed the issues surrounding unconventional cancer treatments. The results of that study are contained in this report. Topics covered include the types of unconventional cancer treatment most available to American citizens and how people access them; costs and means of payment; profiles of typical users of unconventional treatments; legal issues; and the potential for enhancing our knowledge about the efficacy and safety of these cancer treatments. OTA also examined a particular unconventional treatment, Immuno-Augmentative Therapy, and designed a clinical trial protocol to permit valid evidence of efficacy and safety to be gathered.

Cancer is a common disease with a devastating impact on the physical and psychological well being of patients. The diagnosis of cancer brings upon many clinical challenges and questions for which clear and simple answers are not always provided by modern medicine. To date, only limited therapeutic options are available for patients with advanced cancer. The recent shift toward targeted therapies has improved substantially patient’s survival, however, relapses are frequent and cure remains rare. This led patients and many health care managers to shift attention to the holistic approach of traditional medicine particularly preparations from herbal products to manage and alleviate the disease. Typically, herbal preparations contain single or multiple plant ingredients, including a number of potential active components. Yet, they remain classified as food supplements and thus are exempt from regulations on quality control and proof of efficacy that govern standard pharmaceuticals. Clinical evidence for many preparations is often based on non-documented or anecdotal evidence. In consequence, several preparations with unproven efficacy are circulating in the market with the fear of interference with standard cancer therapies and/or severe toxicity that some can generate, in addition to the unjustified economical burden to patients. Despite inconsistent and conflicting clinical results single molecules have been isolated from herbal preparations and many are exploited to develop potential novel agents. This has fostered the need to organize a set of timely, in-depth and up-to-date review covering the latest developments in alternative cancer management from a scientific and clinical perspective dedicated to the medical community and health care providers, as well as to patients and their families. This book brings the latest comprehensive cancer information and practical recommendations on the best documented practice of alternative therapies for cancer management put together by recognized experts in the fields of medical oncology, traditional medicine, and cancer pharmacology. It goes hand-in-hand with the patient’s medical treatment options, quality of life issues, and more. The book is organized into four major sections: The first is an overview of the cancer syndrome by renowned medical oncologists from the USA and Europe. The second is a comprehensive description of traditional medicine by renowned experts from China and Germany. The third is an overview on the pharmacological impact of herb-based formulations on standard chemotherapy agents used in clinical practice. The fourth is a survey of cases reports from several hospitals with approved practice of alternative medicine. The book will feature simple definitions and essential information grouped in both medical and lay-term terminology, and straightforward illustrations related to human physiology, disease definition, scientific data on know and potential mechanisms of action, and preventive approaches. Finally, the book will feature collaboration of experts from China, India, USA, Canada, Germany, France, and other centres with recognized expertise in alternative/traditional medicine. This international cooperation is crucial to cover the complex topic of alternative therapies for cancer.

In the past decades, death rate of cancer patients who received Chemotherapy was extremely high. Although patients spend a lot of money for Surgeries, Radioation therapies and Chemotherapies. A lot of patients still did not survive more than 5 years after they received the treatments. However, the number of patients who survived more than 5 years or even completely cured are rising in the last few years, because more and more patients are choosing alternative cancer treatments. (Also known as Complementary and Alternative Medicine, CAM) Some ingredients in health food can trigger an effect called "Apoptosis." These ingredients not only trigger "Apoptosis" that can kill off cancer cells, but also enhance human immune system at the same time. On the other hand, most of the cancer patients who received conventional medicine were not cured. Many researches have offered theories as to what is the underlying cause of cancers. Unfortunately, none of them were able to explain the diverse aspects of cancer and the development of the disease within the human body. In response to this medical conundrum, Dr. Peter Kovacic wrote a comprehensive review in Current Medical Chemistry 2001. He stated, "Of the numerous theories that have been advanced, oxidative stress is the most comprehensive, and it has stood the test of time. It can rationalize and correlate most aspects associated with carcinogenonesis (development of cancer)." Dr. Kovacic's research supports a growing medical theory that: the presence of excessive free radicals near the nucleus of a cell will result in significant damage to the DNA. The DNA of the nucleus is especially vulnerable when a cell is dividing, during which time the DNA strand is literally unwounded and stretched out. Researchers are now able to confirm not only that free radicals can damage the DNA nucleus of a cell, but also thestrands of DNA as well. Telomerase can compensate for telomere shorting and helps to prevent cellular senescence in eukaryotic cell. In humans, only specific germline cells and the vast majority of cancer cells have sufficient activity for indefinite proliferation. This book will reveal the unknown truth about cancer, also provide a new therapy for cancer treatment at the same. "Apoptosis" is the new dawn for cancer patients. Hopefully, more patients will benefit from this alternative treatment in the near future.

Cancer is a group of more than 200 diseases each of which, though different, attack some of the body's cells. Healthy cells that make up the body's tissues grow, divide and replace themselves in an orderly way to keep the body in good repair but toxic cancerous cells destroy the body. Cancer refers to all malignant tumours caused by the abnormal growth of a body cell or a group of cells. In men, cancer is usually found in the intestines, the prostate and the lungs. In women, it occurs mostly in the breast tissues, uterus, gallbladder and thyroid. The American Cancer Society has prescribed seven signs or danger signals in general which may indicate the presence of cancer. These are: a sore that does not heal; change in bowel or bladder habits; unusual bleeding or discharge; thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere; indigestion or difficulty in swallowing; obvious change in a wart or a mole a persistent and nagging cough or hoarseness.
