Excerpt from The Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature, Vol. 13: January to December Inclusive, 1818 WE cannot close this Volume of the Monthly Repository without returning our thanks to the Friends of Truth and Free Inquiry, for the very liberal support which we have received from them during the past year. They have answered our appeal to their kindness with a readiness and cordiality which have established a lasting claim upon our gratitude, and which will impel us to study to render our work still more deserving of their patronage. It is the Editor's first wish to render the Monthly Repo sitory a complete Register of Facts, relating to the progress of public opinion and feeling, and to the great cause of Truth, Humanity and Freedom. By this means, the successive numbers of the work will not only gratify monthly curiosity, but also, as they gather into volumes, become a valuable deposit of information for after-times. In this view, he earnestly invites communications in the province of literary and religious history and biography. Excerpt from The Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature, Vol. 12: January to December Inclusive, 1817 However gratifyingfthe success of the Monthly Repository Would be to the Editor personally, he is conscious Of higher feelings in this appeal; for he can say, with perfect truth, that whatever loss would be sustained by the Unitarian body in the cessation Of the work, he himself would be a gainer by such an event in most of those points that are Of importance to one who has numerous 'drafts upon his time and labour and health. Excerpt from The Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature, Vol. 10: January to December Inclusive, 1815 Discourses by Dr. Priestley, it appears that this address occasioned a correspond ence somewhat uncourteous, between them, and perhaps not quite unobtrusive on the part of Dr. Priestley. Nor has the Histo rian failed to vent his rancour in his chap ter where, referring to some position by Dr. Priestley, he invites the priest and the magistrate to tremble-a broad hint for persecution-differing only in style from the vulgar watch-word the Church is in danger. Mr. Gibbon was indeed not very suitably addressed on the evidences of Christianity, to the practical influence of which a man so impure in heart as some of his notes discover him, _could be little disposed. Dr. Priestley should have re collected the maxim Of his predecessor Biddle, to discuss serious subjects only with serious persons. The occasional impuri ties of Gibbon's History are well exposed bya distinguished scholar who was him self no precision. See Porson's Preface to his Letters to Travis. Excerpt from The Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature, Vol. 16: January to December Inclusive, 1821 In order to prove the testimony to be false or deficient, it must be shewn that there is not the same reason to believe the genuineness of the books of the New Testament as of other books of equal antiquity, or that the facts which are recorded in them are of such a nature as to exclude certainty of information, or that the historians had no proper opportunity 'of ascer taining their reality, or that, from cer tain rules of decision admitted in other cases, there is reason to conclude that the veracity of these historians may justly be called in question. But if it appear that the gospel-history will abide the test of this inquiry, it must be concluded that no objection can be urged against the testimony, in a'lse considered. And let it be remarked, that this testimony, which is now sup posed to have borne a fair and strict examination, is strongly corroborated by the original presumption in favour of the facts which has already been stated. And that there should be this concurrence of presumption and testi mony in favour of a mere imposture, must be considered as very extraordi nary and improbable. Thus allowing, what has never been disproved, that the testimony, in itself considered, is not objectionable, the general evidence in favour of Christianity may be stated as follows: The new-testament his tory possesses all the requisite marks of credibility. It contains the narra tive of facts, the belief of which pro vailed and extended itself in defiance of prejudice and opposition, and finally produced the most signal and im portant consequences; consequences which are experienced at the present hour.
