The creative economy is a holistic and multidisciplinary concept that deals with the interaction between economics, culture and technology, and centred on the production of creative contents in goods and services. One of the most relevant dimensions of creativity is the territorial one. Despite the emphasis put on the theoretical definition of creativity, the measurement of creative industries and the use of these concepts in macro units as well as in isolated case studies, it is necessary to strengthen comparative research for the identification and analysis of the kind of creativity embedded in the territory, its determinants and its patterns of concentration. This compared research relies on the measurement of the creative industries and the identification of their territorial patterns of distribution in the local production systems of five European countries: Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. Creative local production systems are identified in these countries departing from local labour markets as territorial units, firms and jobs in creative industries, and focusing on two different kinds of creative industries: traditional cultural industries and technology-related creative industries. The results show that creative industries are more important in some countries like Italy and the United Kingdom, and that their spatial patterns of distribution are significantly different across countries, where three basic models emerge: distributed, concentrated and polarized. The implications of these patterns on the analysis of creative industries as well as on the design and implementation of policies are discussed.

Creative and cultural industries, broadly defined, are now considered by many policy makers across Europe at the heart of their national innovation and economic development agenda. Similarly, many European cities and regions have adopted policies to support and develop these industries and their local support infrastructures. However this policy-making agenda implicitly incorporates (and indeed often conflates) elements of cultural and creative industries, the creative class and so on, which are typically employed without due consideration of context. Thus a better understanding is required. To this end, this book features eight research papers, split evenly with regard to geographical focus between the UK and continental Europe (the latter covering Spain, Germany, France, Luxemburg and Belgium individually and in combination). In recent years, the study of creativity has shifted from analysis of culture as an end in itself to one of economic enhancement, and its capability to generate wealth and promote economic development. Increasingly, European cities and regions are using the arts to fuel wellbeing and reinvigorate economies after the comparative demise of more traditional industry and manufacturing. A growing literature is starting to highlight the innovation capacity of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) as they intersect the innovation processes of other manufacturing and services sectors with an innovative and creative output. Culture and creativity may be a strategic weapon to exit the present crisis and redefine an economic model of sustainable development. This book brings together a set of multidisciplinary contributions to investigate the kaleidoscope of European creativity, focussing on CCIs and the innovations connected with them. The two main questions that this volume aims to address are: How can we identify, map and define CCIs in Europe? And how do they contribute to innovation and sustainable growth? The volume is split into two parts. Alla luce dell'intenso dibattito accademico sviluppato attorno alle industrie culturali e creative, la prima parte di questo libro analizza tensioni, dibattiti e divergenze nelle definizioni, nonché le peculiari caratteristiche di queste industrie. Vengono inoltre illustrati gli effetti dell'applicazione di diversi schemi di classificazione del settore culturale e creativo sul suo peso economico, e discusse le difficoltà che esso incontra nella competizione con altri settori per accedere ai programmi di finanziamento europeo. La seconda parte del libro indaga le molteplici relazioni che le industrie creative installano tra di loro e con il contesto urbano. I modelli di localizzazione delle imprese creative vengono analizzati in un caso di studio nella Città metropolitana di Roma. Le distribuzioni spaziali dei diversi settori creativi sono studiate utilizzando punti georiferiti come input per un modello statistico basato sulla funzione K di Ripley. Un'ipotesi nulla di distribuzione casuale viene verificata per le seguenti condizioni: analizzando la distribuzione spaziale di ogni singolo settore creativo rispetto al resto delle attività creative; confrontando a coppie i settori creativi per identificare quelli che rivelano attrazione reciproca; confrontando, per ciascun settore creativo, i modelli di localizzazione delle attività core-creative rispetto alla localizzazione delle rispettive funzioni di servizio. L'analisi empirica ha mostrato che, nella maggior parte dei casi, i settori core-creativi hanno la tendenza di raggrupparsi nello spazio a piccole distanze mentre i rispettivi settori di servizio sono dispersi internamente e disposti attorno al cuore. I confronti reciproci hanno rivelato l'esistenza di cluster creativi urbani caratterizzati dalla coesistenza di diverse attività creative.

Not only have governments identified the growing consumer potential for cultural/creative industry products in the home market, they have also seen the creative industry agenda as central to the growth of external m- kets. Creative industries are highly concentrated forming clusters. One of the main problems for the identification of clusters of creative industries in Europe is the lack of data, constrained in practice to regions (NUTS 2) and influenced by the heterogeneity in the definition of NUTS across countries. This research uses firm-level data geo-referenced at address level and geostatistical modeling to identify clusters of creative industries in fifteen European countries. The procedure is independent of administrative divisions and national boundaries and allows to produce a precise geography of the clusters of creative industries in Europe.
