I am burdened by the increasing numbers of believers who know the Lord very superficially. They do not love Him. They find the time spent in His presence uninteresting. Often they do not know what to say to Him. We live in a generation that does not provide for quiet. Everything is moving fast. There is so much activity going on. The leaders of the day, be they in worldly circles or in the Church, are activists. Those who withdraw to wait on God are few. We believe that when believers in an increasing number, begin to withdraw and spend time alone in God's presence, something will happen to them. They will know God and then they will seek Him more and more. They will serve Him from His presence and things will be different. They will make spiritual progress. We send out this small book with prayer that the Lord will use it to help some make spiritual progress by withdrawing to seek God, know Him and obey Him. If you have been blessed through reading this book, please help put a copy in the hands of another believer and pray that he, too, will be blessed.

Throughout In Plane Sight, Rick Stephens lays out his personal life in sweeping detail to show how igniting his spiritual life with God helped him achieve success at work, at home, and at play. Stephens describes how his experiences were enshrouded within a master plan God had for him from the beginning—not a predestined plan of “things to do,” but a way of living that led to a life of great adventure, joy, and meaning. After becoming president of two different companies, and being fired from both, Stephens started his own company with a promise from God like that of Abraham many years ago, and a spouse fully on board. Horizon Hobby grew from an idea to become a world leader in the design and development of radio control hobby products, including airplanes, helicopters, cars and beyond. Under Stephens’ leadership the company reached $330 million in revenues with over 700 people in facilities around the world. However, his success in business paled in comparison to the joy of employing biblical principles and living out his faith in the workplace. In Plane Sight recounts how Stephens’ spiritual life was just as real and a part of every experience as what he underwent physically. Instead of compartmentalizing his faith as one of several priorities, he shows how life on earth flourishes when viewed through the lens of the Creator and people live according to His plan for them. In Plane Sight becomes not Stephens’ story, but God’s story within a man.

The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually There is a process of spiritual growth. Do you know what it is? Can you guide others along its path? The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually overviews this process with a step by step approach using nearly sixty real-life vignettes, clarifying charts, over 250 documented scripture citations, supportive Christian music from fifth through the twenty-first centuries as well as referencing important spiritual authors. Dr. Haynes writes for all Christian helpers including Bible study and church leaders as well as pastors, spiritual directors and small group facilitators. In addition to encouragement and increased understanding of spiritual growth, spiritual helpers will also receive a toolbox to assist with the on-the-road spiritual difficulties including types of prayer, effective forgiveness, dealing with pain, spiritual Dark Nights, subversive words and demons from the unconscious. Those familiar with psycho-social and faith developmental theories will appreciate, Dr. Haynes' comparisons with the process of personal spiritual growth. Endnotes and a bibliography as well as general and scriptural indexes round out this extensive work. The book's overall purpose is to assist Christians to grow in their personal relationship with God and in mature Christ-likeness in order to affect the Community of God in the world. Richard A. Haynes is an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), receiving his Doctor of Minister degree, with distinction, from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois in spirituality and small groups. Dr. Haynes has served as a spiritual director for over twenty-five years, was founder and executive director of Paraclete Retreat Center, Inc. for eighteen years and retired after twenty-nine years in pastoral ministry. In retirement, he continues to provide spiritual guidance in person and through Skype ([email protected]). He and his wife, Patricia, live in south-central Indiana and have one married adult son.
