Dotzauer études have been part of the standard repertoire in cello lessons for generations. Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) was among the major cellists and cello pedagogues of the 19th century and knew what makes a good étude: it should deal specifically with a certain technical problem and at the same time not be monotonous, but musically appealing. The cellist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Dresden Hofkapelle managed to do that in an exemplary manner. 24 Caprici in tutti tuoni Op. 35 (1816) is Dotzauer's masterpiece, wonderfully showing off the varied tone colours and playing techniques of the violoncello. Demanding études for lessons and performances, with beautiful melodic and harmonic ideas, some with slow expressive introductions, some with artistic arpeggios or contrapuntal polyphony. Our new edition follows the original sources and contains the original text.

Fencing with a one-handed sword and a buckler has fascinated people since the 13. century. This form of fencing can be traced back to a manuscript with the inventory number I.33 of the Royal Library Museum in London. However, it is difficult to derive fencing from this manuscript alone. This fencing book contains all relevant basics for fencing with a one-handed sword and a buckler. The fencing 'Huten' are explained in detail - taking modern fencing practices into account - as well as the footwork and the trajectory of the strokes. This books focuses on the handwork. These are integral techniques - which are prepared clearly and didactically - to show beginners everything they need to know about fencing with sword and buckler.

The exercises contained in this volume range from very easy exercises – some even on open strings only – to short extreme exercises which can be combined to form an individual programme at various levels of difficulty.

Over the last decade, musicological interest in both the composing virtuoso of the nineteenth century and the phenomenon of virtuosity has increased. Moving beyond approaches to music solely in terms of works allowed for a range of perspectives on concepts of virtuosity to emerge. Such cultural theory-based approaches crucially put the traditional musicological image of the virtuoso into a broader context. Recent advances in performance studies, furthermore, emphasise the need to include factors such as staging, the audience, sound and space, and musical practices, in our understanding of the complex phenomenon of virtuosity. The present volume tries to meet the challenges raised by these multi-layered perspectives by varying the foci on virtuosity – from specific attention to individual virtuosi and considerations of virtuosity’s historical and social context to broader questions regarding innovations in the current landscape and future virtuoso phenomena. The broad range of topics centres on the composer and virtuoso Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst and his immediate sphere of influence. The contributions in the present volume not only reveal the complexity of the research field of virtuosity but also liberate Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst from the shadow of fixed, mainly non-musical, discourses on virtuosity around Paganini. The enclosed CD with recordings by Guillaume Tardif, Philippe Borer, Clive Brown and Friederike Spangenberg enriches these texts by including the dimension of sound.
